What is Equine Facilitated Learning?

Equine Facilitated Learning uses the natural connection between people and horses to support growth and well-being.

Horses mirror our emotions and behaviour, helping us understand ourselves better. Through simple ground activities, like guiding a horse through an obstacle course, people learn trust, communication, and resilience.

Why Horses?

Horses are incredibly perceptive animals. They don’t judge, they don’t label, and they live entirely in the present moment. This makes them uniquely placed to respond to people’s emotions and body language in ways that are both honest and compassionate.

Because horses rely on clear communication and mutual trust, they naturally encourage us to be more aware of how we feel and how we interact with others. They pick up on tension, calmness, hesitation, or confidence, often mirroring it back without words. For many people, this creates powerful “lightbulb moments” of self-awareness that traditional talking therapies sometimes struggle to reach. This is at the heart of what’s known as equine facilitated learning—a process that uses the horse-human connection as a tool for growth and healing.

What to Expect in a Session

No horse riding experience is needed. In fact, all of our work takes place on the ground. Sessions are carefully planned and adapted to each individual, but common activities include:

  • Leading exercises – guiding a horse through a series of obstacles helps build trust, patience, and communication.

  • Observation and reflection – simply spending time with horses allows people to notice patterns in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

  • Practical teamwork – working in pairs or groups encourages cooperation, problem-solving, and empathy.

Every session is designed to feel safe, supportive, and enjoyable. The focus is not on “performance” but on the relationship that develops between the person and the horse. These are the foundations of equine facilitated learning, where structured activities help people explore emotions, behaviour, and personal strengths.

Who We Work With

Equine facilitated learning is for anyone—children, young people, and adults alike. Some of the people who benefit most include:

  • Children with additional needs – including autism, ADHD, and learning differences. Horses provide structure, safety, and a chance to practise communication and social skills.

  • Teenagers – navigating self-esteem, anxiety, and identity. Working with horses can offer a calm space to express emotions and build confidence.

  • Carers under pressure – from workplace stress and anxiety to depression and burnout, sessions help people slow down, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.

  • Survivors of trauma – horses offer a non-judgemental, grounding presence that helps rebuild trust and safety.

  • Families – equine facilitated learning can even be a shared experience, encouraging stronger bonds and healthier communication.

Our Approach

We combine professional expertise in coaching and wellbeing with the natural sensitivity of horses. Each session is tailored to the person, whether the goal is to manage stress, explore personal growth, or develop new skills. Above all, our approach is compassionate, respectful, and empowering—helping people find their own solutions in a safe, non-judgemental space.

Equine facilitated learning is more than an activity—it’s a life-enhancing process that helps people of all ages heal, grow, and thrive.
